Squirrel monkeys are specialists in forming very large groups (ranging from 10 to 40, 100, 300 and even more than 500 individuals). These American primates are very social animals and have a life expectancy of 15 to 21 years., although in captivity they have reached over 30. The males are somewhat older than the females. Short-haired and greenish-brown in appearance, they present a white coloration around the eyes, ears, chest and sides of the neck. One of the characteristics of the Saimiri Monkey is the blackness of the upper part of the head and the muzzle, which contrasts with the color of the back and extremities (reddish, greenish or yellowish). It sleeps with its tail curled up, like squirrels (hence its name). It occupies a territory and marks it with urine, until it ends with the fruits. He communicates with others in the group through different voice calls : up to 26 of them have been described.

WHAT DOES THE Squirrel MONKEY EAT?

The Yellow squirrel monkey is omnivorous and its diet consists of fruits, berries, nuts, flowers, seeds, leaves, resins, nectar and small vertebrates . The fruit makes them lose hair from the sides of the body.

HOW DOES THE Squirrel MONKEY REPRODUCE?

In relation to their reproduction, when the breeding period begins (which lasts between three and four months), the adult males get fat and are aggressive. The females copulate with several of them. The gestation lasts almost six months , after which comes the breeding; males neglect rearing and it is other females in the group who assist the mothers in caring for the saimiri babies. Weaning occurs at six months, and sexual maturity, between two and a half years and four years.
